CLEVELAND, OH – AUGUST 22: Buffalo Bills wide receiver Trent Sherfield (81) is tackled by Cleveland Browns safety Donovan McMillon (31) after making a catch during the first quarter of the National Football League preseason game between the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns on August 22, 2026, at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland, OH. With all the hoopla surrounding the new stadium, I nearly forgot there’s a team taking shape before our very eyes! Preseason debates on the roster bubble can be fun, right? Wide receiver Trent Sherfield opens up a couple debates on the bubble matter. Not only does the usual talent component matter here, but with Sherfield the fact that he’s such a “veteran” opens the door for dialogue on keeping a developmental player over him. Against the Cleveland Browns, Sherfield did a heck of a job saying…

Now this comes with the usual preseason disclaimer about the opponent not planning for the game, not playing against the best, yada yada yada. That said, some of the things in that little film would be present regardless of the quality of competition.

Sherfield’s ability to stop and cut back, his physicality blocking, and his ability to adjust to the catch would all be there no matter who is on the other side of the ball. Kyle Allen chucked the ball around rather nicely in Preseason Week 2, and a large part of why that was possible is named “Trent Sherfield.”

Will it be enough to make the roster on the 2026 iteration of the Buffalo Bills? I think he’s making a very solid case for himself. Despite being on the wrong side of 30, Sherfield is still plenty athletic based on his preseason performance. He adds veteran savvy finding soft spots in coverage, and lining up correctly for blocking on run downs.

There’s one more week of preseason action, and I know I’ll be keeping an eye on his snap counts against the Pittsburgh Steelers. If the usual preseason trends hold true, the less he plays, the better his odds are on making the 53.
