The hype around DJ Moore this preseason has really started to get me excited about his potential with Josh. His walk-off OT TD last year was iconic, but I wanted to do a bit more of a deep dive into how he performs in late game situations when it matters most. It's obviously a bit nitty-gritty, but we all know we've been in situations like this in the playoffs – where we've desperately needed a big play from a WR. So I've been digging into 5 years of play-by-play data, specifically looking at what happens when a game is tight late, trailing by one score in the 4th or OT. I created a chart below that shows splash-play rate (20+ yard gains), and how that changes in late game situations when trailing by 8 points or fewer. Moore's splash-play rate (20+ yard gains) nearly doubles in exactly those situations: 12.5% normally, up to 21.7% when we would need it most. This feels like something that we haven't necessarily had in the past (s/o Gabe Davis though in 13 seconds), so let's hope this rings true this season because all it really takes is one play to change everything.
