The Buffalo Bills have just put the finishing touches on their first 53-man active roster for the 2026 NFL season. It’s a grueling process made worse by informing scores of young men that they won’t be continuing on with the team, at least initially, as part of the game-day roster.

Given the harsh nature of NFL employment, there’s also a chance anyone who made the initial roster could also find themselves released the next day if the Bills claim someone else. However, many of those players released now or later on could find their way back to the team through the practice squad, which for Buffalo can contain as many as 17 players.

Among the other moves that the Bills will have to address in the coming weeks are roster moves for three players. Wide receiver Tyrell Shavers has been moved to Reserve/PUP; defensive lineman Zane Durant was placed on Injured Reserve (designated to return, per Sal Capaccio); and defensive lineman Phidarian Mathis will begin the season on the NFL’s Reserve/Suspended list for a violation per the league’s banned substances list.

There are of course several notable moves related to the Bills’ first active roster of this season, but what stands out is their decision to keep four tight ends, while also retaining zero fullbacks. Buffalo also rolls into Week 1 on the road against the Houston Texans with eight defensive linemen, and 10 among both outside/inside linebacker.

Sound off below with what surprised you the most, and what questions you have regarding the Bills’ first active roster of the season!
